Anhydrobiosis in Non-conventional Yeasts

2019

Anhydrobiosis is a unique state of living organisms that provides the possibility of surviving conditions of extreme heat and drought with temporary and reversible suspended processes of metabolism. Beyond its ecological importance in nature, it is used for the production of viable dry microbial preparations, including active dry yeast. During the last decade, this state has also been studied in non-conventional yeasts (NCY), mainly because of the necessity of active dry wine yeasts. At the same time, many other modern biotechnological processes are also linked to the use of NCY. Correspondingly, this implies an interest in the long-term maintenance of various species of NCY in a viable dry…

Exposure to elevated temperatures and risk of preterm birth in Valencia, Spain

2014

Abstract Background Prematurity is the second-leading cause of death in children under the age of 5 worldwide. It is predicted that the future climate will have more intense, longer lasting and frequent extreme heat episodes, and so the temperature effect on the risk of preterm birth is generating considerable interest in the public health field. Our aim was to explore the potential short-term effects of elevated temperatures on the risk of preterm birth in Valencia (Spain). Methods All singleton natural births born in the metropolitan area of Valencia during the warm season (May–September, 2006–2010) were included ( N =20,148). We applied time-series quasi-Poisson generalized additive mode…

Heat pipe controlled syntheses of ionic liquids in microstructured reactors

2009

Abstract The combination of a heat pipe and a microstructured reactor allows to perform highly exothermal reactions under safe conditions. First experiments for the synthesis of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium-triflate from 1-methylimidazol and methyl triflate showed that at high flow rates of more than 5 ml/min through a single 300 μm × 500 μm wide and 400 mm long channel quantitative conversion could be achieved. This chemical reaction, known for extreme heat release, can be retained under thermal control even at much higher flow rates.

Water-soluble chlorophyll proteins (WSCP) from Brassicaceae form homotetrameric chlorophyll (Chl)–protein complexes binding one Chl per apoprotein and no carotenoids. Despite the lack of photoprotecting pigments, the complex-bound Chls displays a remarkable stability toward photodynamic damage. On the basis of a mutational study, we show that not only the presence of the phytyls is necessary for photoprotection in WSCPs, as we previously demonstrated, but also is their correct conformation and localization. The extreme heat stability of WSCP also depends on the presence of the phytyl chains, confirming their relevance for the unusual stability of WSCP.

Simulation of extreme heat events over the Valencia coastal region: Sensitivity to initial conditions and boundary layer parameterizations

2019

The Valencia coastal region (Western Mediterranean) is especially sensitive to extreme heat events, where they are really common. However, due to its geophysical characteristics and climatic conditions, the incidence of high and extreme temperatures may still be modulated over this area by means of sea breeze circulations, defining a Sea Breeze Convergence Zone (SBCZ) due to the meet and interaction of these mesoscale conditions and Western synoptic-scale wind regimes. A proper definition of this convergence zone is of significant importance over the study area for the simulation and forecast of intense-heat meteorological events. This study analyses a week period in August 2010 over this a…

Impact of Initial Soil Temperature Derived from Remote Sensing and Numerical Weather Prediction Datasets on the Simulation of Extreme Heat Events

2016

Extreme heat weather events have received increasing attention and has become of special importance as they can remarkably affect sectors as diverse as public health, energy consumption, water resources, natural biodiversity and agricultural production. In this regard, summer temperatures have become a parameter of essential interest under a framework of a hypothetical increase in the number of intense-heat conditions. Thus, their forecast is a crucial aspect bearing in mind a mitigation of the effects and impacts that these intense-heat situations could produce. The current work tries to reach a better understanding of these sorts of situations that are really common over the Western Medit…
